Panel 1

Novacek, smiling at Zane as he turns away, says "I'd better get going. I have a call into my publisher tomorrow and I haven't written a *lick*. So long." Zane, smiling back and waving, says "Well, it was great to *meet* you --" Mercy is on his shoulder, watching the man leave. The large window running along the length of the building lets in a great deal of bright, light blue light, and the walls and floor are bright, jarring shades of aqua and light blue.

Panel 2.

Maurice pounds open the door of the diner with his fist, his face anguished and small bubbles and spirals floating around his head, indicating his drunkenness. He's saying, in large text, "*It ain't right! It just ain't right!*" Snow and wind blow through the door into the diner. The force of Maurice's blow is shown by a yellow mark on the door, and thin white lines show the path of his hand as it swung the door open.

Panel 3.

Zane, looking startled and worried, says "*Maurice!* What's--" Maurice, gesturing wildly and surrounded by bubbles and spirals, continues "*Maris should be here!* It ain't *right* for a man to *die in the forest*!" Morris, looking worried, has one hand on Maurice's shoulder.

Panel 4.

Zane, his face concerned, says "Have you been drinking Switchwater *all night*?" Maurice is flailing around, saying "He didn't freeze! *He was murdered!*" Then, in large text, he continues, "*Murdered!*" Morris, who doesn't appear to be drunk himself, still has his hand on Maurice's shoulder and seems to be trying to calm him down.

Panel 5.

Zane, the waitress and another patron look on in dismay. Voices from offscreen say "Get some *coffee* into this man!" "For Pete's *sake*!" "Morris! Don't just *stand* there, get him in the *booth!*" A few flakes of snow drift onto the panel.

Panel 6.

Zane looks to the side, an uncomfortable expression on his face, and says "Those are the Bottlefly Boys. Broodhollow is reeling from the terrible news about--" Mercy is looking to the side, as a few flakes of snow continue to drift onto the panel.

Panel 7.

Zane looks to the side at the door, which is still opened a few inches, the snow continuing to blow in. With a worried look on his face, he says "Mr. Novacek?"
