|Book 1: Curious Little Thing||Page 35: Pace Is The Trick||
- Panel 1
Zane is out of the alley, back on the sidewalk, walking away. There are some pieces of scrap paper on the ground, and in the alley the two blue figures are visible, though just as wisps behind the garbage can. In the background are outlines of tall buildings against the red sky and flocks of normal sized bats. Zane has his eyes squeezed shut and his mouth closed in a tight frown. He seems to be walking very deliberately, his left foot forward and his arms bent at the waist with his right arm forward. The coloring of the strip is gently shaded and mottled.
- Panel 2.
Zane passes the empty town square where Mayor Osgood addressed the residents of Broodhollow earlier. There's some trash on the ground and the platform where Osgood was standing is still there. The platform is adorned with half-circle swags of red, white and blue fabric. They look like four half-closed eyes with red pupils. The clock tower is in the background, and the bats continue to fly around in the sky. Zane's eyes are open and he continues to walk carefully, this time with his right foot and left arm forward.
- Panel 3.
Zane is crossing the street near the lawyers' office. All the streetlamps are on, and there is no one else around. There are no more bats in the dark sky. His eyes are closed, and his left foot and right arm are forward.
- Panel 4.
Zane has reached the front door of the Hotel Umbra. All of the lights are off except for the lights in the room with the front desk. His eyes are open and his right foot and left arm are forward.
- Panel 5.
Zane is going up the stairs. His eyes are shut and his left arm and right foot are forward.
- Panel 6.
Zane is lying on his back in bed in his dark hotel room. His eyes are wide open, and he doesn't appear to have changed. Behind him is the mirror.
