|Book 1: Curious Little Thing||Page 41: An Honest Wage||
- Panel 1
Planchett, standing in front of the American flag in his office, is pointing his index finger up and talking to Zane with a sanctimonious expression, his eyes closed. He says "I *get* it, kid! You've been in the *chiseling game* too long and want to sidle up to a *butter and egg* man. Classic scenario. You want to *work* for me."
- Panel 2.
Planchett is close to Zane now, poking his finger at his chest while Zane leans back, intimidated by Planchett's angry expression. "But Rutherford Planchett doesn't *play* dirty pool," he continues."I built my business on the *up and square!* You got *nerve*, kid! It's a shame you don't have *brains* to go with it!"
- Panel 3.
Zane looks despairing as he says "No, I want to *leave*! But then I'd lose my inheritance to *you*!" Planchett replies "Then *stay* if you're as hard up as you say you are! What's the hurry? *Fuzz* on your tail?" He opens the door behind Zane.
- Panel 4.
Zane is back outside the office, looking uneasy as Planchett slams the door on him. From the other side of the door Planchett shouts, "You can't bamboozle your life away, kid! One of these days you'll have to earn an *honest day's wage!*"
- Panel 5.
Zane looks jittery and sweaty as he looks to the side and thinks "It's *my fault*... I broke the *pattern*. I left that door *ajar* last night! Now it's making me *wait* here one more horrible day!"
- Panel 6.
He looks worried and pensive, touching a finger to his lips, as he thinks "I just need a little honest cash to keep me until --!"
- Panel 7.
Zane is walking backwards, dragging his trunk, which is labeled Encyclopedia Atlantica, with both hands. Sweat is falling off his forehead and neck, but he's cheerfully whistling.
From Panel 5, Zane is looking nervous and sweating. He says "Man, I hope something good happens today. I forgot what it's like not to terror-sweat."
