- Panel 1
Zane has his back against the front wall of the main room of the antiques shop, right by the closed front door and the window to the side. It is still dark inside, and the background is a cool blue. He is shaking and looks deeply upset. Mercy is clinging to his shoulder. He says "How can Dr. Angstrom *ignore* what's right in front of him, Mercy? Just because it doesn't fit his *theory* doesn't mean it's not happening!"
- Panel 2.
Zane is walking on the sidewalk outside the antique store. It is sunny outside and the antique store looks bright and orange, a marked contrast from the cool blue inside of the building. Zane looks haunted as he walks with Mercy flying behind him, saying "Young Maddy *killed* Iris' dad. Now she's after *me*. No one will listen because something about this town blinds people to the *truth*." A man in a suit and hat, walking past Zane in the opposite direction, turns his head to look at him, one eyebrow raised and a dubious expression on his face.
- Panel 3.
As he walks, Zane, still sweating and shaking, touches his face with his hand and says "Angstrom thinks being a man of science makes him immune, but *nobody* in Broodhollow is! The only reason I'm still alive is *the pattern*. If I can't stop Maddy, maybe Iris will be *next*. I have to learn everything I can about her." Mercy is still flying behind him, looking at him as if she's listening.
- Panel 4.
Zane encounters the gap-toothed boy selling a stack of newspapers and asks him "Kid, where's the public library?" The kid replies "On Chambers Street! Ya can't miss it! Say... Are you all right, mister?"
- Panel 5.
Zane, facing the boy, says "I guess I didn't sleep. I'll be fine." The boy points proudly with his thumb at a purple thistle fastened to his lapel and says "You're not wearing your Deliverance Day *thistle!*"
- Panel 6.
Zane leans over and screams, in very large text, "*What is wrong with your town!*" Short white lines come from his face to express his anger and loud voice. The boy puts one hand in front of him and looks shocked.
